Norilsk Nickel says finances 6 bln rbl of oil spill liquidation
MOSCOW, Jul 13 (PRIME) -- Russian metals producer Norilsk Nickel has financed 6 billion rubles of works to eliminate damage stemming from an accident in Norilsk, the company said in a statement on Monday.
"Total clearance spending was estimated at about 10 billion rubles (about U.S. $150 million). 6 billion rubles have been spent already (as estimated as of the beginning of July 2020)," the company said.
Additional investment to boost safety was estimated at 2.5 billion rubles in 2020 and 11 billion rubles in 2021.
Earlier in July, the Federal Service for Natural Resources Oversight assessed the damage inflicted on the environment by the spill at 147.7 billion rubles. Norilsk Nickel disputed the amount of damage.
A fuel tank at Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company, part of Norilsk Nickel group, lost pressure on May 29 and leaked out 21,000 tonnes of fuel and lubricants into the river Ambarnaya, causing a fire.
